With the threat of security out of the way, we can continue to explore in peace. It’s going to probably be our staple attack aside from the wrench for a while. We’re psychic, so we can fire ice blasts! Cryokinesis is the most basic psi attack, and great for weaker enemies and cameras.

I guess even in death the security crew of the Von Braun really stands by their duty. If you stay in it’s sight for a few seconds, the alarm sets off, calling tons of hybrids to your location until the timer resets. Down the hall a bit more is our first security camera. Combine this with the fact that the inventory menu and hacking don’t pause the game, and the fact that enemies respawn and are somewhat randomized, and you can never really feel safe.Ĭrisis averted, and now it’s time to move on. So if they’re not making some other noise, you have no way of knowing if they’re sneaking up on you while you loot, hack, mess with your inventory, or whatever. Many of the enemies in the game don’t have footstep sounds. This is actually something that adds to the creepy feel of SS2. While I was looting the first, a second came up and started clobbering me. These basic guys aren’t hard to take out with the wrench, so let me just help myself to his loot.

There’s no Hybrid-analog to Spider Splicers, but there are some other enemies we’ll meet later who come close.

There are Grenade Hybrids, who like the Nitro Splicers in Bioshock can toss grenades when the only way you can use them is via grenade launcher. There are also Shotgun Hybrids, who wield… shotguns instead of tommyguns like Leadhead Splicers. This here’s a basic Hybrid, who carries a pipe, just like the Thuggish Splicers. These are the guys that inspired Bioshock’s Splicers. Well anyway, we’d better get fetch questin. To get in there, we need a key from some guy named Grassi, and he’s in the medical section. But that just so happens to be locked too. Watts has the key, but he’s stuck in the crew quarter subsection of this deck. But to get down there (since there’s no elevator) we need to take the maintenance access. Polito calls us up and says that to reroute power, we need to head down to engineering and manually do it. Since we’re on a spaceship, this means air and gravity and doors and security and replicators and toilets and turrets and regular door locks and all other fun stuff like that works just fine, but the elevator’s out. Xerxes, the shipboard AI, has cut main power. Oh look, the elevator! Meeting up with this Polito lady’s going to be easier than I thought!Ĭrap. There’s a security booth to our left, and a hallway with some doors on our right. Stepping out into the hallway, we take a look around.
